Attaining the CPEng status in New Zealand means that you are an experienced engineer who has been evaluated as fulfilling a quality mark of excellence.

Attaining the CPEng status in New Zealand means that you are an experienced engineer who has been evaluated as fulfilling a quality mark of excellence. In other words, it is proof of your capability of dealing with complex engineering problems that only a professional with expertise can do. You need to be reassessed at a minimum of every six years for the maintenance of this credential.

Although engineers with chartership have to demonstrate New Zealand-specific technical experience, this status is a competency mark with global recognition.

It is a protected title, and having this title means you are registered with the Registration Authority for Chartered Professional Engineers. Thus, everybody will expect you to stick to a Code of Ethical Conduct.

Over some years, the New Zealand government has been working on potential changes to engineering regulation methods. In March 2022, Cabinet gave their yes nod to a new licensing regime for engineers who are involved in safety-critical work. However, it will take some years to be fully in operation.

In the meantime, any capable engineer thinking about applying to become a Chartered Professional Engineer should apply for assessment, even if they may need to be licensed in the future.

Eligibility criteria:

You must fulfill the following criteria for chartership:

  1. You must have a Washington Accord-accredited qualification (Bachelor of Engineering, Honours) or be capable of demonstrating equivalent knowledge.
  2. It is a must for you to commit to the CPEng Code of Ethical Conduct.
  3. You must complete an assessment to show that you satisfy the competency standard.
  4. Having reassessment at least every 6 years for the maintenance of your CPEng registration is a must-do for you.

You are not required to be a member of Engineering New Zealand for applying.

Charges:

The first-time assessment fee is $1,721.50 ($1,336.50 with mutual recognition).

Equivalent knowledge assessment: $1,292.50 (if without a Washington Accord qualification)

Yearly fee: $506.00

How to apply:

You can apply for the CPEng status by means of the Engineering New Zealand member area online. Its members will already have access. If not an Engineering New Zealand member, sign up to reach its online area. Afterward, set your goal. It will then be able to recommend the next step for you to attain chartership.
