PEO issues its limited licence to those who have at least 8 years of expert experience, which has helped them develop competence in a certain area of professional engineering.

Submission requirements:

To be eligible for a limited licence, you have to:

Possess a three-year degree or diploma in an engineering, science, or technology program or have equal educational qualifications, with knowledge corresponding to the scope of services within the practice of professional engineering to be provided under the limited licence. You have to arrange for your academic transcript to be sent directly from the respective institution/university;

Pass the NPPE (National Professional Practice Examination;

Demonstrate that your character is good;

Pay the applicable fees;

Demonstrate a minimum of eight years of experience in the practice of professional engineering which must be:

With a minimum of six years of experience related to the scope of services within the practice of professional engineering to be provided under the limited licence, and  

A minimum of four of those six years’ experience attained in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of one or more people with legal authority to engage in the professional engineering practice in a Canadian jurisdiction.

What to include when submitting your application:

Submit the following when you apply for a PEO limited licence:

A completed limited licence application

A copy of your identity proof. For that, use one of the following documents: Canadian birth certificate, Canadian citizen certificate/card (both sides), permanent resident card (both sides) or From IMM 1000 of record of landing.

A copy of your latest experience record, hire a Professional Engineers Ontario competency report expert to know more about this.

Payment of the application fee, which is $360+HST= $406.80. Don’t provide a cheque or money order at this time, the authority will let you know when a payment is necessary. In addition, it will also tell you how to pay online.

Changes related to the limited licence:

The necessary documents when applying for the limited licence may change from July 1st, 2023, or earlier. A currently limited licence applicant will continue their licensing process as normal until they have any further notice.

Probable blackout period for the new applications of limited licence: 

PEO is launching a better licensing process from July 1st, 2023. It hopes to launch an online application system for the limited licence in the future. There might be a blackout period in advance of the July 1st, 2023 launch in which a prospective applicant will not be able to apply.
